This is Mont Saint Michel, an imposing fortified church and abbey off the coast of Normandy, in northern France. The first buildings were begun in 709 AD and were expanded for centuries, until about the 15th century. Shown here during low tide, the best view of the structure is seen at high tide, when it appears to be an island in the midst of a sea.
