Haghia Sophia, Istanbul |
|
|
This is the Church of Holy Wisdom, or Haghia Sophia, in the Sultanahmet district of the city, taken from the same rooftop as the previous photo. It was built by the Emperor Justinian over two older churches in 537 AD. It has been buttressed many times over the centuries and was converted to a mosque in the 1450s, just as many of the other churches during the time of Mehmet the Conqueror. |
