Aswan was famous for its rock quarries for centuries, producing the pieces for numerous monuments throughout Egypt. This particular one, called the Unfinished Obelisk, would have been one of the largest ever if completed, weighing in at an estimated 1000 tons. It was abandoned in antiquity due to the development of a crack along its surface.
