These are the statues of Ramses II at Abu Simbel. The façade measures a height of about 33 meters and each statue about 20 meters. Like most things in ancient Egypt, they’re much more impressive in person than in a photo. Construction was begun in about 1284 BCE and lasted about twenty years. With the construction of the Aswan High Dam and the subsequent creation of Lake Nasser, these temples along with the Temple at Philae were in danger of being flooded. In the 1960s UNESCO moved the entire complexes to new locations which were on higher ground.
